AI-assisted coding interview practice

A newer kind of coding round lets you use an AI coding assistant during the interview. The idea is to test how you work with the tools engineers use every day, rather than what you can recall on a blank page.

Using the assistant is expected, so the question is how well you use it. Interviewers watch whether you break the problem down before prompting, whether you test what the assistant gives you or paste it in blindly, and whether you can explain every line of the final code. It's a new skill, and worth practicing under interview pressure before the real thing.

PrepLinx puts an AI coding assistant in a side panel next to your editor, with an AI interviewer on the call. The interviewer sees your code, your runs and your conversation with the assistant, and the feedback scores your prompting and verification alongside correctness.

What this round tests

Decomposition

Planning the solution before you touch the assistant, then delegating pieces deliberately.

Prompting strategy

What you ask the assistant and why, instead of pasting in the whole problem.

Verification

Testing, tracing and questioning the assistant's output before accepting it.

Ownership

Explaining any AI-written code in your own words and defending it.

Edge cases

Making sure the final solution handles boundaries the assistant may have missed.

Production readiness

Knowing what you'd change before shipping.

Practice questions

Examples of the questions and follow-ups you can expect. Practice saying your answers out loud, not just reading them.

  1. Before you accept that suggestion, how would you check it's correct?
  2. You pasted the assistant's code in directly. Walk me through what it does, line by line.
  3. Did the assistant's solution handle the boundary condition in the requirements? How do you know?
  4. Why did you write that part yourself instead of asking the assistant?
  5. If the assistant's code had a subtle bug, how would your process catch it?
  6. What would you change before shipping this to production?

How a PrepLinx session works

  1. 1

    Choose the round

Pick the role, the interview type and a difficulty (easy, medium or hard). Optionally add a job profile with your resume and the job description, so the questions relate to that job.

  2. 2

    Interview out loud

The AI interviewer speaks, listens to your answers and asks follow-ups. It doesn't give hints or say whether you're right, just like the real thing. The session runs up to 60 minutes.

  3. 3

    Get scored feedback

A report with a 0–10 score for each dimension the round is graded on, strengths quoted from your own words, weaknesses, concrete improvements and an overall hiring signal, plus the full transcript.

How to prepare

Plan first, then delegate

Sketch the approach yourself, then hand the assistant well-defined pieces, like a helper function or a test. Pasting in the whole problem is exactly what this round is designed to catch.

Verify every suggestion

Run the code, add a test for the edge case, or trace it by hand before you accept it, and say out loud what you're checking.

Read the AI's output aloud

Narrating what the generated code does shows ownership and catches bugs before the interviewer does.

Push back when it's wrong

Correcting or re-prompting the assistant when its answer is off is a strong signal, not a weakness.

Own the final code

Expect to explain any line. If you can't, rewrite it until you can.

Frequently asked questions

Isn't using AI in an interview cheating?

Not in this format. The assistant is part of the interview, and you're evaluated on how well you direct and check it. Secretly using AI tools in an interview that doesn't allow them is a different matter and can get you disqualified.

Will my interview include an AI-assisted round?

It depends on the company and the role, and interview formats change quickly. Ask your recruiter which rounds your loop includes, and if it has one, practice it here first.

How is the AI-assisted round scored?

Alongside correctness and edge cases, the feedback scores your decomposition, prompting strategy, verification and ownership, based on your actual conversation with the assistant.

How long is a session?

Up to 60 minutes.
